Dog Brushing Care
Dog should be brushed daily for removal of dead hair and dandruff. This will also help in distribution of skin oil over the whole body. The time required for brushing depends on the type of hair coat and general body condition. In case of small hair dogs time spent is less as compared to long hair dogs. The long hair and double hair coat dogs need more time for routine brushing care.
They should be checked for hair knots and they should be removed regularly, but only with help of comb and scissors otherwise its skin may be injured while removing the mats. Different types of brushes and combs can be used for different types of hair coat and owner can take guidance from veterinarian and can buy these from pet shops.
Dog Bathing Care at Home
The dogs should not be bathed very frequently as this will remove their skin’s natural oil and may cause dryness and dandruff. So, in winter they can be bathed once a month while twice a month in summers, using mild shampoo. Never use strong and harsh shampoos or soaps for dogs as they may damage the skin and can cause dryness of the skin. Always prefer medicated or other normal shampoos, which are made specifically for dogs. After shampoo, the dog should be washed properly with plain water to remove the excess to prevent dandruff. While giving bath to dogs, shampoo should not enter the eyes, as it may cause irritation and itching. So, care should be taken.
Coconut oil massage is very helpful for the dogs with dry skin and dandruff. Always keep in mind the weather condition. And the normal temperature of water. The dogs should not be let outside just after a hot bath. Dogs can be sponged in winter or bathed with plain water in summers, if necessary. Pups should not be bathed so frequently till the age of 3 months, especially in winters otherwise they may have lung congestion and cough problems.
Dog Nails Care
The dog nails should be cut regularly in case of indoor dogs as street dogs rub their nails with ground surface while walking and keep them trimmed. Indoor dogs are out only for walking and they may have big nails as their nails may not be in touch with ground for long period. So, they should be cut properly and not to be crushed. Only the white portion should be cut, otherwise there will be bleeding from the raw nail. Dew claws should be cut always to avoid further complications. Dog Ears and Eyes Care
Dog-ears should be cleaned every month with the help of finger and cotton using either ointments or lotions. Always massage the ear gently after applying lotion or ointment. Do no use a sharp object to clean the ear. Breeds having dropping ears should be checked regularly to prevent the chances of ear infection and the hair should be trimmed to make the air movement.
Eyes should be examined by veterinarian for regular health check up. If there is any foreign or irritating substance in the eye, it can be sprinkled with cold water and boric acid. In long hair breeds, the air around eyes should be trimmed to prevent irritation to eye ball.
Dog Tooth Care
Teeth may develop tartar and plaque depending on the quality of food given to dogs. Generally, dogs don’t have such problems if they take solid food instead of soft food. Dog Teeth can be brushed with dog’s toothpaste to keep them clean. Sometimes, due to food habits, plaques will develop on the crown of teeth and if the teeth are not cleaned regularly it will develop into tartar. This may lead to infection in gums, if care is not taken at proper time. For this the dog should be taken to veterinarian for proper cleaning of teeth. Thus good food habits should be adopted to prevent all these problems.
